Dear Anne

I hope you don’t mind my getting in touch. I know it’s been a long time since we shared any news.

It’s about my sister, Barbara. Three months ago she walked out of the flat we’d been sharing and I haven’t seen or heard from her since.

I kept waiting for a phone call or a letter, even a postcard. Then, as the time went on, with no news, I wondered if she’d had an accident. I told the police, but they just told me to check the hospitals. Seems that if you’re an adult you can walk out of one life into another and there’s nothing your loved ones can do about it.

You’re probably wondering why I’ve chosen now to write to you.

We had some good times together, didn’t we? You were always so kind to us both. Your mother too. And I know you had to bear the sadness of losing her soon after the war ended. So sad, she was a special lady.

I feel I’m in a kind of limbo until I know what has really happened to Barbara.

I got to thinking about the happier times the three of us had together and I wondered if you could spare an afternoon to come up to London? We could meet in a café close to the station, maybe just for an hour or so?

Please say you’ll come.

Yours

Matthew Harding
